The issue of same-sex marriage has moved below the radar, but has not faded from the self-serving agenda of some. SJR7 (Indiana’s Marriage Amendment), is a measure that will lead to a State constitutional amendment to protect the historical definition of marriage. SJR7 has stalled in our legislature.
The will of the people (and God) in this matter is clear: Same-sex marriage is unacceptable. The proposed amendment states: "Marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman. This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.”
Majorities of both Republicans and Democrats (by a slimmer margin) in the State Senate and House support SJR7. However, House of Representatives Speaker Patrick Bauer refuses to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.
Our representatives need to hear from us on this matter. Indiana should join 27 other states in guarding the sanctity of marriage. This is not a matter of so-called gay rights, homophobia or other diversions from the larger issue of marriage and family. As individuals, gays already have the same rights as all other citizens and they should be treated fairly, like everyone else.
This is about taking preemptive action to amend our state law to protect the already endangered institution of marriage. Maintain your resolve on this issue and let your voice be heard. Do not allow one man or a few people to frustrate good public policy.
