Day 30

Romans 15:1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.
One of the responsibilities of having success in life is to focus on helping others. A great lesson I learned early in my Christian life and as a socially responsible person is that “service is the rent you pay for citizenship.”
The word “scruple” is defined as “a feeling of doubt or hesitation with regard to the morality or propriety of a course of action.” People who are not spiritually strong often struggle to have resolve and be decisive. Encouraging and teaching people about Jesus Christ and God’s word will help them become stronger.
There is an interesting dynamic in our culture called “hedonism.” It is defined as, “A school of thought that argues that pleasure is the primary or most important intrinsic good. A hedonist strives to maximize pleasure.”
In our culture, through its various forms of media and entertainment we clearly see hedonism. As Christians, we not only live for pleasure, we live for purpose. We do not discount the blessings of God or the pleasures that follow, but it is to easy to settle into a lifestyle of seeking only recreation, rewards, and pleasures at every turn. Believers in Christ seek better priorities and a healthy focus on helping others along the way.
Serving and building up others is the example that we see in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection Question: What does it mean to edify others?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 29 - What is the Kingdom of God?

Saturday, October 29, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

Day 29

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
A “kingdom” is a domain ruled by kings and leaders. For example the United States is a kingdom. Nigeria is a kingdom. England is a kingdom. Nations have presidents, kings and queens. These same nations have laws and customs that define their culture. All of us live within an earthly kingdom (nation) and live the experience and culture of our nations.
We can think of God’s kingdom in a similar way but on another level. Paul contrasted God’s kingdom to a worldly kingdom, that involves eating, drinking, and many other physical and social activities.
Paul used that example to highlight the unique qualities of our “citizenship” in God’s kingdom that include: righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. He goes on to say that when believers live according to God’s kingdom, they experience benefits in the present world, which include favor and blessing from God.
In this manner of thinking, “dual citizenship” has many benefits!

Reflection Question: What makes you acceptable to God and approved by people?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 28 - Can’t Judge Another’s Servant

Friday, October 28, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

Day 28

Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.
We don’t want to make the mistake of judging people whom we really do not know. Even with people we know, we cannot fully grasp their responsibilities or mandate from God.
When the waiter comes to your table, takes your order, brings your water, or does other things you request, you might start to think that he is working for you. No, he works for the restaurant, but he is serving you.
This example describes the work of your pastor and other ministers of the Lord. They serve us, but they work for Jesus. We are never in a position to judge people over whom we carry no authority.
We are living in a very cynical time, but don’t let cynicism take you outside of the will of God. Do not make the mistake of judging people who do not work for you. When people make that mistake, God continues to empower His servants and make them stand.

Reflection Question: What is the problem with judging another’s servant?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 27 - Cancelling Complacency

Thursday, October 27, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

Day 27

Romans 13:11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
One of the great dangers for Christians is complacency. Complacency is defined as: “A feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, especially when coupled with an unawareness of a need.”
Paul offers a powerful parallel using the word “sleep.” When we sleep we are unaware of our surroundings, oblivious to others, and unable to respond.
Christians do not want to be “asleep in the light,” but alert and ready to serve God. While Christians do not have darkness inside of them, we do not want to operate in darkness by failing to work with Christ or letting God have His way. Sometimes the works of darkness we need to cast off are simple distractions to living in God’s light. Simple things like watching a lot of television, engaging in a lot of leisure, or even constantly interacting on Facebook can put us to sleep spiritually. None of these activities are wrong, but anything can become darkness when we fail to see the light of what God wants us to do.
The “armor of light” is a beautiful phrase putting us in the mind of being clothed with the power and grace of God. We are all wearing armor that both protects and empowers us.

Reflection Question: What are 1-3 ways that you need to “wake up?”

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 26 - The Role of Governing Authorities

Wednesday, October 26, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

Day 26

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves...4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil
As citizens we recognize both God’s government and our civil government. He established both. We obey laws related to driving, taxation, business transactions, and much more.
We have both elected and appointed officials who are recognized as having civil authority. This would include our presidents, governors, mayors, police officers and others.
Some have suggested the text in Romans is referring to police officers, in that they are, “...an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” This is not the role of police officers. Police officers, who deserve our utmost respect and support, serve the purposes of law-enforcement. They are not empowered or authorized to make law or execute judgment on lawbreakers. They are authorized to protect, serve, issue citations for violations, and make arrests. If citizens are under threat or if police lives are being threatened, they can use force, including deadly force.
In our legal system, we have something called Due Process. Citizens have the right to be arraigned, considered innocent until proven guilty, and have a trial/hearing in a court of law. In the legal system, the law, judges, and courts are the “avenger” that “execute wrath on him who practices evil.”
Matters of submission to authority should extend from parents up to the President of the United States.

Reflection Question: Why are police not authorized to execute judgment?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 25 - How to Overcome Evil

Tuesday, October 25, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 25

Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
One of the dangers of becoming consumed with our modern 24/7 news cycles is that we can become overly stimulated, distracted, or fearful based on a constant barrage of negative information. In a sense, we can become overcome with “evil.” We’re not overcome in the sense that we start doing evil things, but we may become too disturbed by it to maintain proper focus. Jesus said, “Because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matt. 24:12)
This can result in constantly talking and complaining about bad conditions in our community and society. We should certainly be socially conscious, active, and aware of what is happening in the world around us. However, the purpose of our awareness and engagement is that we can function as “salt and light” in our generation. Jesus called us “the light of the world” and “a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden.”
In other words, we are called to overcome evil with good. We do this, not just by talking about conditions. We have positive impact by taking God’s word to people and helping them in various and creative ways. We don’t only preach, but we also “do good.”
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. (Acts 10:38)

Reflection Question: How does consuming too much negativity hinder you?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 24 - Basic Instructions

Monday, October 24, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 24

Romans 12:9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
When the Spirit of Christ abides in you, God’s grace shapes your lifestyle. When the Bible provides direct instructions on how to live, understand that everything God requires, He has already provided. We are recognized by our faith and lifestyle. As Jesus said, “A tree is known by its fruit” (Luke 6:44) and we are the “planting of the Lord.” (Isaiah 61:3)
God does not ask you to do anything that is not already part of your character in Christ. If this were not true, you would not be able to do what He asks. For example, in our own strength, it is not possible to be “kindly affectionate with brotherly love.” This is a virtue, like all the others, that comes from the grace of God within us.
You can always do what God says you can do!

Reflection Question: How is God helping you to help others?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 23 - How to Think About Yourself

Sunday, October 23, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 23

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function.
We are never in a position where we need to be conceited, brag, or try to “show off” to impress others. You are already exactly the person that God had in mind!
In a world where people are confused about their identity and sometimes seek to assume the identity of others such as celebrities, we have the opportunity to discover our unique “measure of faith.” Your measure of faith are the abilities, assignments, and opportunities God has made available to you. God has given everything you need to serve Him.
One of the great blessings of serving God is summed up in the phrase, “where God guides He provides.” It is truly amazing how God can provide faith and provision for everything He wants you to do. It is also amazing that our individual gifting results in stronger coordination and collaboration as the body of Christ. We are a team and a family, each having individual responsibility resulting in the fulfillment of greater collective purpose.

Reflection Question: What is your measure of faith?

The Republican Party Needs a System Upgrade

Sunday, October 23, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/republican-presidential-candidate-donald-trump-speaks-news-photo/484801206

[Note: This article is a repost from October, 2015]

I write as a former admirer of the Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP) and the “Party of Lincoln.” In particular, I have admired GOP figures in my adult lifetime such as Jack Kemp, Colin Powell, both presidents named George Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and a number of local GOP public servants over the years, including former Indianapolis mayors Bill Hudnut and Stephen Goldsmith. I regard myself as politically independent in order to maintain objectivity and a clearer focus on greater priorities.

There is a lot of cynicism about American politics nowadays. The approval rating of the US Congress has been in single digits for some time. I routinely hear disparaging and disrespectful remarks about President Obama that I never heard about previous presidents.

Structurally, the Republican Party began to change in 1965 with the passage of the Voting Rights Act by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson. This action to support the rights of African Americans angered racists in the Democratic Party such as the KKK, Strom Thurman, and many others. In those days, the Democratic Party was the preferred “home” of racists and white supremacists, especially in the deep South. The actions of President Johnson, prompted a great number of Black people to switch loyalties from the GOP to the Democratic Party. Because of Abraham Lincoln, African Americans were largely loyal to the Republican Party. This migration of black people to the Democratic party resulted in political and racial “white flight.”  Today, the GOP is the preferred “home” of racists and white supremacists, though certainly not welcomed among the ranks by the majority of Republicans, but nor are they called out or expelled.

President Richard Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” was another factor leading to the present lack of racial diversity in the Republican Party (Read more about the Southern Strategy)

Civil rights era historical context notwithstanding, I often found reasons to support Republican candidates, based mainly on leaders I came to respect and trust because of their consistency, compassion and competency. Unfortunately, that as changed.
In recent years, entertainers such as Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter have dominated the narratives and brand image of Republicans. Publications such as the American Renaissance and groups like The League of the South, identify as conservatives and align with the GOP.

The promotion of “conservatism” as something akin to “righteousness,” especially by Christians, moved the GOP towards a perception, and seeming mindset of being “God’s Own Party.” This perception was helped by Democrats embracing policies such as ending wars, increasing the minimum wage, making voting more accessible, allowing gays to openly serve in the military, universal healthcare, defending legalized abortion, promoting gay marriage, and more. As result, among an increasingly simplistic and low-information GOP electorate, “liberal” policies are always deemed as "bad/sinful" while “conservative" policies are always deemed as "good/righteous." In reality, neither major political party are promoters of biblical righteousness.

As religious conviction began to merge with politically conservative ideals, some Republicans became increasingly inflexible and conspiratorial. Since Christians don’t believe in compromising their faith, when “conservative” Christians (politically conservative, but not necessarily biblically conservative) united with the GOP, they brought their sense of uncompromising religious conviction into the political domain. This explains, for example, why some elected politicians feel they cannot vote for any piece of legislation that contains any shred of perceived “immorality," such as an entire federal budget that contains any amount of funding for an organization like Planned Parenthood. Leading from this ideology is the religious conviction that a true Christian cannot vote for a Democrat and should only “vote the Bible” or “vote biblical values." (Read my article on Voting Biblical Values).

Irrational and false beliefs, especially about Barack Obama, are another cause for disappointment with the GOP. High percentages of Republicans agree with the following about President Obama:

1) He is a muslim and an enemy of Israel.
2) He is a socialist—a view that reflects a lack of understanding about the definition of socialism.
3) Does not love America and is not a real American.
4) He has ruined “our country” and brought judgment on America.
5) Blacks voted for him only because he is black, (of course, whites could not have voted against him because he is black).

Even when confronting issues and people with whom we strongly disagree, showing respect, and being truthful and factual are essential.

Racially motivated actions (such as voter suppression) negative statements by GOP leaders regarding black people and latino people (who are assumed to be illegal) only add to the perception that Republicans are sympathetic to the concept of white supremacy. No sooner than the GOP officially distances itself from these actions and attitudes, their voters or rank-and-file GOP politicians do something that alienates minorities.

This year’s election cycle features a leading candidate on the Republican side, Donald Trump, who has no experience as an elected official—is the preference of GOP voters. There is an “anti-establishment” sentiment going around, like a virus. This has resulted in infecting people with an erroneous perception of politics and politicians.  I liken the phenomenon to becoming disenchanted with “establishment” airline pilots and seeking to replace them with persons who have no experience piloting.

What is truly ironic is that the conservative base of the GOP and its factions such as the Tea Party and Freedom Coalition, along with media surrogates such as Fox News, have created this current climate of anti establishment-ism. Fueling this climate and general sense of frustration/anger is intense opposition to President Barack Obama personally and politically. The nation has observed relentless, howbeit symbolic, efforts to stop or repeal President Obama's policies such as the Affordable Care Act law (i.e. Obamacare) with more than 50 GOP House of Representative votes to repeal ACA. There was the government shutdown of 2011 which was designed to curtail government spending, but only resulted in causing the USA to default on obligations and incur an embarrassing reduction in the nation’s credit rating.

Of course, the “loyal opposition” has every right to protest when not in power, but Republicans have gone overboard, have undermined their own credibility, and created this present anti-establishment climate. Worst of all, is that voters of their own party (as of this writing) are looking to the likes of anti-establishment personalities Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Carly Forina to lead them.

Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump, in particular, is a catastrophic embodiment of the disillusioned and desperate GOP voter base. His public statements, positions, and narcissistic disposition cannot help the GOP connect with minorities ("Mexicans bring crime and are rapists")
, substantively address issues such as immigration (“Build a wall”), foreign policy (“Serve McDonalds to the Chinese President”), or terrorism (“Shut down all mosques"). He is running a campaign based on self-aggrandizement, insults, irrational statements, and real-world policy indifference. Trump, along with the nice, but equally unqualified, Dr. Ben Carson, are the leading GOP presidential candidates, as of this writing.

As much as conservatives loathe President Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, their irrational, anti-establishment behavior can only help to elect another Democratic President in 2016. Too many GOP politicians, especially US Representatives that serve two-year terms from homogeneous, gerrymandered districts, are beholden to very narrow interests. Some seem to be committed to undermining fellow government officials, weakening federal government, and seeking to eliminate laws and/or governmental policies without consideration of political compromise.

Again, I believe this is the result of merging religious conviction with political activism. The objective seems to be about taking over and transforming government into a tool for God’s use, which is not a biblical concept, in my view. This is called "Dominionism."

I think the current presidential election cycle will result in a major “correction” within the leaderless Republican Party, not unlike economic corrections that disrupt markets before settling into a new reality. Using another analogy: When a computer operating system gets hacked and is full of malware, it must be upgraded...or discarded.

The most ironic idea of all is that the party whose members are the first to pronounce “judgment” on America may itself presently be on the receiving end of said judgment.

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 22 - Be a Living Sacrifice

Saturday, October 22, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 22

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
In this text, the apostle Paul, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, summarized our blessing and responsibility in the Lord.
In the Old Testament, animals were offered for sacrifice. They were sometimes tied down to the altar before being slaughtered. The death of the animals was a result of the sin of the people. It was the penalty of sin transferred to animals, and it had to be repeated many times because people continued sinning.
This is what Jesus did for us, with the important difference that His solution was not temporary, but permanent.
Today, because of Jesus, we don’t offer sacrifices of animals. We can offer the living sacrifice of our lives in service to God.
In the summer of 2016, the Olympic games were held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. We saw athletes who worked and trained the previous four years, and longer, just for the opportunity to offer their abilities as a living sacrifice in the international arena of the Olympic games. That training required “not being conformed to the world” in order to be prepared to compete. Depending upon the sport, the athlete had to change his thinking, his diet, and even changed his lifestyle to develop his skills to the highest possible level.
We as Christians have a similar task in a much different context. All of our work is done through the empowering grace of God. Make no mistake, we have responsibility to follow God. Obedience and willingness to follow God results in becoming God’s “athletes” who can do great things in our world!

Reflection Question: What does it mean to be a living sacrifice?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 21 - Know that God Knows All

Friday, October 21, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 21
Romans 11:34, “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?” 35 “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” 36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
I am amazed and amused at how some people seem to convey a greater understanding of God than all others. It is certainly true that we can learn of the Lord and share His word with others, but no one person knows everything. No one helps God! No one knows the mind of God, just like no one can know your mind.
The entirety of Romans 11 addresses many profound topics such as God’s dealings with His chosen people Israel and the mystery of how He has “grafted in” Gentiles (non-Jews). The chapter is dense with theological truth and doctrine. At the end of the chapter, Paul concludes by writing the following: “For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” (v. 36)
In our lives, it is appropriate to think, ponder, and seek to understand God’s words and God’s ways. But there comes a time when we reach an end of our thinking and understanding. At that time, the best thing we can do is trust God and worship Him as the one who knows all things!

Reflection Question: What should you do when you come to the end of your understanding?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 20 - How Faith Comes

Thursday, October 20, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 20
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Continuing from the previous lesson, we learn from this text that faith can only come from the Word of God. Just as people can only earn college degrees from learning the content during college classes, God’s “content” is learned from the Bible and through people who preach/teach the word.
People who don’t hear or take the opportunity to obey the Gospel cannot be saved, though God continues to extend His mercy. This is why the apostle Paul extensively traveled his world preaching and planting churches. This is why we continue to send missionaries around the world to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
When people hear God’s word, they can have faith to believe Him for salvation and for everything else God wants to do.

Reflection Question: What and who are your sources for hearing God’s Word?

ROMANS ROAD DEVOTIONAL | Day 19 - Genuine Faith

Wednesday, October 19, 2016 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

DAY 19
Romans 10:6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “’Who will descend into the abyss?’”(that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):
Genuine faith in God requires neither “signs” nor our “help” to fulfill God’s word. We don’t need Jesus to come down from heaven. We don’t need to go to heaven to see Him. If He were still in the grave, we would not have to go to that place to bring Him up. God’s Word and promises have their own power.
Genuine faith does not demand external evidence. The beauty and simplicity of the faith is that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again to make it possible for us to receive from God by believing and speaking.
Religion demands that people do something to prove their earnestness to God. Cults only require allegiance to a person.
For the person who wants new life in Christ, he only needs to receive what Jesus has already provided. Not only has God provided salvation, He has provided the “measure of faith” to receive it. For the person coming to faith in Christ and for believers who already serve Christ, the word of faith is in your mouth and heart.
This is not some magical formula, it is not a particular Christian movement, it is simply the way that we access the grace of God. Ephesians 2:8 says “we are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God not of works lest anyone should boast.”
Something that is provided by the grace of God can only be received by faith...and that faith begins with believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth. God does the rest!

Reflection Question: Why does faith speak? What does faith say?
