Wisdom’s Top Ten Benefits

Sunday, September 19, 2010 Bryan Hudson 0 Comments

Below are my "Top Ten" list of benefits from the Book of Proverbs 1-23. Feel free to share your thoughts or list of key insights from Proverbs.

1. Wisdom gives you a firm foundation
Proverbs 1:1 (NLT) These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. 2 Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. 3 Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair.  4 These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. 5 Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser.  Let those with understanding receive guidance 6 by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles.
2. Wisdom helps you to recognize the benefits of having the fear of the Lord
Proverbs 1:7 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
3. Wisdom is the basis of “soul prosperity” which leads to prosperity at other levels
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers." 3 John 2 (NKJV)
The soul is the mind, will and emotions. If we are healthy in the inside, we will have difficulty finding stability and success on the outside.

Wisdom is more important than money and helps keep you grounded when financial blessings come.
Proverbs 3:13, (NLT) Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. 14 For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold. 15 Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. 16 She offers you long life in her right hand,  and riches and honor in her left. 17 She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying.18 Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.
4. Wisdom keeps you thirsty for God’s best
Proverbs 2:2, (NLT) Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. 3 Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. 4 Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. 5 Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.
5. Wisdom shows us how to listen, overcome obstacles and major on the majors
Proverbs 4:10 (NLT), My child, listen to me and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life. 11 I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths. 12 When you walk, you won’t be held back; when you run, you won’t stumble. 13 Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go. Guard them, for they are the key to life.
Proverbs 16:20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.
6. Wisdom teaches you how to guard your heart and focus forward
Proverbs 4:18 (NLT), The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day. 19 But the way of the wicked is like total darkness. They have no idea what they are stumbling over…23 Guard your heart above all else,  for it determines the course of your life…25 Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. 26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. 27 Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.
The cost of being constantly distracted from God's will is a price too high to pay. Verses 25-27 offer crystal clear guidance: 1) Focus forward, 2) Mark out or chart your path through prayer and planning, 3) Stay on good paths, 4) Don't let people or circumstances pull you aside, 5) Never follow evil.

7. Wisdom teaches us about the power of diligence.
Proverbs 6:6 (NLT)  Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! 7 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, 8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. 9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? 10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— 11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.
Proverbs 21:5 Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.
8. Wisdom bring financial prosperity
Proverbs 8:12 (NLT) “I, Wisdom, live together with good judgment. I know where to discover knowledge and discernment. 13 All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech. 14 Common sense and success belong to me. Insight and strength are mine.15 Because of me, kings reign, and rulers make just decrees.16 Rulers lead with my help, and nobles make righteous judgments. 17 “I love all who love me. Those who search will surely find me. 18 I have riches and honor, as well as enduring wealth and justice. 19 My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold, my wages better than sterling silver! 20 I walk in righteousness, in paths of justice. 21 Those who love me inherit wealth. I will fill their treasuries."
9. Wisdom is the cure for the simple-minded
Proverbs 9:1(NLT) Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns. 2 She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table. 3 She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city. 4 “Come in with me,” she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, 5 “Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed.6 Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.”
Proverbs 14:15 A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.
10. Wisdom teaches us about the blessings of sowing and being generous
Poverbs 11:24-25 (NKJV), There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty. 25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.
Wisdom shows us the importance of caring about those who are poor
Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Day 21 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Straight Talk About Prosperity God's Way"

Sunday, September 19, 2010 Bryan Hudson 4 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 23:

Proverbs 23:4 Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. 5 In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.

People who only focus on getting rich end up deceiving themselves, wasting time, and losing the few resources they have. People who have worked their way into wealth have done so by focusing on excellence, providing wanted goods and services in the marketplace, working in the most profitable fields of endeavor, well educated in their area of expertise, connected to the right people, talented, hard-working, fortunate, and more.  Needless to say, success is not easy.

Knowing what not to do, or to stop doing, is often as important to success as knowing what to do. Some types of wealth, like investments, can come and go in the "blink of an eye." The Great Recession of 2008 showed this to be true. For many people, they're vanishing wealth looked exactly like something that sprouted wings and flew away.

Proverbs 23:9 Don’t waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice.

This is a harsh, but true statement. The problem this presents for us is that we must consider whether or not we are dealing with a fool. We don't want to judge people, but the Bible teaches us that a tree is known by its fruit. People who reject the word of God, and even common sense, are acting foolishly. Trying to give advice to such persons can be a waste of time. Certainly, we should pray for such persons and wait for God to open their hearts and make them receptive. On the other hand, let us not be the people who behave foolishly and are not open to correction and advice.

Proverbs 23:12 Commit yourself to instruction;  listen carefully to words of knowledge.

This scripture summarizes the key theme for the whole book of Proverbs. We must COMMIT OURSELVES to instruction. We don't simply attend church and say, "Amen!" We don't carry Bibles as accessories or look at preachers as if they are giving us opinions. We wholeheartedly received the Word of God and the wisdom of God, giving the best of our attention so that we might learn, grow, and change to become more Christlike.

Proverbs 23:17 Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the Lord.18 You will be rewarded for this;  your hope will not be disappointed.

Sometimes we look at sinners, consider their outward success, and wonder, "Lord why are you not blessing me?" Do not make the mistake of being jealous of people who do not serve God! As the text states, we should always continue to fear to Lord. The text also states that we will be rewarded for doing so, and our hope will not be disappointed! What a tremendous promise this is!

Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

The most influential people in our lives should be our fathers and our mothers.  Even if your parents do not serve God in the way that you think they should, parents have lived longer than you, and they most certainly know more than you know about many things in life. Again, learning to listen is one of the great themes in the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 23:29 Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30 It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks.

These verses, and those that follow to the end of the chapter, provide a very stark warning concerning drunkenness and spending time in places where people drink.Drinking and getting drunk serve no useful purpose in life. Think of all the people that you know whose lives have been ruined by alcohol and other addictive substances. We can learn from people about things NOT to do.

Closing Thoughts:
I trust you have been blessed over these 21 days of reading through the first 23 chapters of the Book of Proverbs. I've been blessed to seek the Lord and post these daily nuggets of truth for you. We've only touched on a few of the principles contained in this marvelous book of Scripture.  I pray you will continue to study God's Word, gain insights, and allow the Lord Jesus Christ to transform your life.

I'm confident that God will help us all to prosper His way, and serve his purposes in our generation!

Day 20 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Dealing with Children, Debt and Generosity"

Saturday, September 18, 2010 Bryan Hudson 7 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 22:

Proverbs 22:4 True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.

Being humble and walking in the fear of the Lord does not make you weak or disengaged from the "real world." Humility brings blessing from the Lord. He can trust humble people to handle blessings properly and keep all things in perspective.

Proverbs 22:6 Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

Every child gets trained. The question is: Who is training your children? Be diligent to know what your children are learning and what examples are being modeled before them. Our children attended Christian school, but my wife and I had to work to instill in them our own family, cultural and biblical values. The "right path" is not the same for every family or every person.

Proverbs 22:7 Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.

Recently, I was reminded of the control that the rich exercise over the poor. It looks like the only things that the urban "poor" (comparatively speaking) are allowed to "rule" are their barber shops, beauty salons and churches. (Of course, I'm being a little cynical!)

When people are saddled with consumer debt, they are not free. This year, a law was enacted that required lenders to show on credit billing statements the time required to pay off a debt, if making minimum payments. This is a true picture of borrowers serving lenders!

Proverbs 22:9 Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

This is another reference to the virtue of blessing poor people. Clearly, this is part of God's plan for our lives.

Proverbs 22:26-27 Don’t agree to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for someone else.  If you can’t pay it, even your bed will be snatched from under you.

This is a warning regarding the perils of "co-signing" on debt for another person. Note the words, "If YOU can't pay it…" (Not if THEY can't pay it…) This is certainly not a prescription for "prosperity God's way!"

Day 19 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Factors Leading to Poverty and Prosperity"

Friday, September 17, 2010 Bryan Hudson 8 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 21:

Proverbs 21:2 People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.

One of the great advantages of knowing the Lord is having the Holy Spirit examine our hearts. Obviously, we only know what we know. We tend to be persuaded only to our own points of view. We are inherently subjective, meaning that we trust our own feelings more than anything else. God helps us to become objective, meaning that we can look more independently at our own opinions and views. Let the Lord examine your heart, and be willing to change your view or opinion based on the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 21:5 Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.

There are a number of scriptures in this chapter that address practical concerns regarding prosperity. Here in Verse Five is one of the most fundamental principles of success: Planning well and working hard brings successful outcomes. On the other hand, being hasty and taking shortcuts to quality, leads to lack and the condition of poverty.

Proverbs 21:6 Wealth created by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist and a deadly trap.

Wealth is neither a sure sign of godliness nor of prosperity God's way. There are a lot of wealthy people in this world who have gotten rich by telling lies, deceiving people, and using other wrong methods. People who became wealthy by immoral means may not lose all their money. However, as far as biblical principles is concerned their wealth is illegitimate. The text also characterizes ill-gotten gain as a "deadly trap."

Proverbs 21:13 Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

This is another instance in the book of Proverbs where Solomon highlights the importance of having compassion for the poor. Any plan of success or prosperity that excludes ministering to the poor is a short-sighted plan.

Proverbs 21:17 Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

One of the major barriers to prosperity God's way is indulging in pleasures and wasteful lifestyles. Some of the most successful people are very reserved and disciplined in their behaviors.

Proverbs 21:20 The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

People who are unwise often squander their resources. Many of these folks do not save, plan, or exercise restraint in their spending. Some people use credit cards for consumable items like food and clothing.

Day 18 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Understanding; A Key to Success"

Thursday, September 16, 2010 Bryan Hudson 8 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 19:

Proverbs 19:2 Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes.

Excitement is good, but not good enough. Ultimately, if you lack knowledge, your enthusiasm will appear to be little more than what former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan famously called, "irrational exuberance." He coined this phrase to describe investors who were excited and trading, but did not fully understand the dynamics of what they were trading. Excitement can lead to overly quick decisions, which is the definition of being hasty. Enthusiasm fueled by a lack of knowledge is a very bad combination.

Proverbs 19:3 People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord.

God often gets blamed for things that go wrong. It is human nature to deflect responsibility for mistakes onto others, including the Lord. When God knew that Adam had sinned, and called him to account, Adam's response was, "Lord, this woman you gave me, she made me eat the forbidden fruit." (Gen. 3:12). We know from the text  that Adam stood by and allowed his wife, and himself, to disobey God. This made him responsible because he had been given the charge to oversee the Garden of Eden.  In so many words, Adam's response was, "God you got a problem, or this woman has a problem, but I don't have a problem."

Proverbs 19:8 To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.

Jesus clearly said that in order to love one's neighbor, one must love himself. (Mark 12:30) This is not a statement of conceit, but a healthy respect for who God created one to be.  We belong to God. We are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus. When we understand that fact and embrace our responsibility to Almighty God, we will have an accurate view of what it means to love oneself.

One definition of understanding is to "know the meaning of a thing." Success and prosperity most certainly cannot come to people who do not understand who they are, or what they should be doing. As Proverbs 4:7 says, "In all your getting, get understanding."

Proverbs 19:14 Fathers can give their sons an inheritance of houses and wealth, but only the Lord can give an understanding wife.

This is an interesting verse. It seems to make the point that all of what one person can do for another pales in comparison to what God can do. This verse also highlights the importance of a marriage relationship, which can last for decades, over the often temporary state of material possessions.

Day 17 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Tests for Purity of Heart"

Wednesday, September 15, 2010 Bryan Hudson 10 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 17:

Proverbs 17:3 Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.
God is always concerned with foundational principles. Purity has to do with our hearts and purposes not being mingled with ungodly influences. Everything gets tested and proven. The Apostle Paul addressed this issue of foundational purity in 1 Corinthians 3:12 "Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward."

This Scripture may refer to a time when we stand before the Lord in judgment of our works as believers. However, I would like to believe that we're being tested and purified in this season as well. I don't want to wait until the end to find out if my works were worthy of Christ.

Proverbs 17:5 Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.
This is another reference in Proverbs about the importance of how we relate to the poor. God loves the poor and he is concerned about their welfare and future success. I am sometimes concerned that our society, as well as the Church, becomes so obsessed with the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" that we "tune out" the poor. Someone once said that a society can be judged by how it treats its children and its poor citizens.

Proverbs 17:16 It is senseless to pay tuition to educate a fool, since he has no heart for learning.
This seems to be a questionable translation of the text in the New Living Translation (which sometimes reads more like a paraphrase than a Bible translation). However, it presents an interesting perspective. The new King James version of verse 16 reads, "Why is there in the hand of a fool the purchase price of wisdom, Since he has no heart for it?."

The idea of this text seems to indicate that investing resources to provide education or wisdom to persons who have no desire for it is a waste of money. As we have learned through this study in the book of Proverbs, people must choose to listen to God and to value what He has to say.  Jesus said it another way in Matthew 7:6, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."

These seem like harsh words, yet they are based on proven principles.

Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.
Success and prosperity benefit from maintaining a cheerful attitude. If we do not have joy in serving the Lord, there will not be much motivation to serve faithfully. A broken spirit helps nothing. Discouragement and  disappointment will bring us low if we do not cast our cares on the Lord.

Proverbs 17:24 Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.
In a world full of distractions and foolishness, it is more important than ever to keep our eyes "glued" on the wisdom of God.

Proverbs 17:27 A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.
When wisdom is operating in our lives, we don't need to attempt to adjust our perception in the sight of others with our words. Sometimes talking too much is evidence of something lacking in one's heart.  God's wisdom and understanding helps us become settled and steady day after day.

Day 16 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Make Your Plans, Then Give Your Plans to God"

Tuesday, September 14, 2010 Bryan Hudson 10 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 16:

Proverbs Chapter 16 is full of powerful insights for victorious living! Be sure to read/study the entire chapter.

Proverbs 16:1 We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer. (Also see verse 9)

Making plans is both wise and necessary. God does not do our planning for us. The key is to lay your plans before the Lord in prayer and ask for His direction and "answer."

Proverbs 16:3 Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.

After we have consulted with God about our plans, we need to seek wisdom on the next actions. It is not enough to commit to what we've already planned do to. We need to give those actions to the Lord so that He can perfect them and give us specific wisdom on each item.

Proverbs 16:6 Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.

Jesus paid the price for our redemption and forgiveness. He did it, not primarily because we needed it, but because He loved us. God's unfailing love and faithfulness is the motivation for everything He does. So long as we fear the Lord (also see Day 10 post), we'll be safe from participating in evil deeds.

Proverbs 16:7 When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them.

We spend too much time in conflict with people and too little time focused on pleasing God. If we please God, He'll handle our enemies. These are people and/or forces that work against your best interest.

Proverbs 16:8 Better to have little, with godliness, than to be rich and dishonest.

Some people can't handle increase without great temptation to compromise their integrity. While I believe that God wants to prosper His people, I know that some believers have not prepared their hearts to handle greater blessings. The sad fact is: Some people are better Christians when they have less. Don't settle for that status!

Proverbs 16:16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!

This is another among many scriptures in Proverbs that place wisdom and good judgment far ahead of material gain. Again, this is the core truth of "Prosperity God's Way."

Proverbs 16:20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.

Enough said!

Day 15 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "The Power of Prudence and Compassion"

Monday, September 13, 2010 Bryan Hudson 8 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHTS FROM PROVERBS 14:

Proverbs 14:15 A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.

Many of the important themes in the book of Proverbs are often repeated. Again in this text is the warning against simple minded. "Simplicity" is good in that we do not complicate the word or ways of God. However, being simple or simple minded by being easily persuaded or impressed by lofty claims is not good.

Giving thought to our steps is one the characteristics of people who are prudent.  The word prudent is defined as,"acting with or showing care and thought for the future." Using this definition, we can understand how that being simple minded does not consider how present actions affect one's future. Rash or overly emotional reactions can make our future more difficult than it needed to be.

Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Another theme in the book of Proverbs is the condition of poor people and our proper disposition towards them. This text plainly states that it is displeasing to God to oppress the poor. In fact, the word goes on to state that to oppress the poor is to show contempt for God himself, their Maker. It is not that God makes people poor as much as it is the fact that many people struggle to find success in life despite earnest efforts. Other people are innocent recipients of difficulties such as companies shedding jobs, illnesses that drain financial resources, and other factors which people cannot control.

I have often asked the question, "Who are the poor?"  Since we are commanded to assist the poor and not disrespect them, we should be clearer about who are poor people. In my view, the person who goes out and runs up a lot of debt on credit cards making ill-advised purchases, then loses his job for behaving unethically, does not qualify as "poor" under a biblical review. This is not to suggest that we should not have compassion on such persons but to highlight the source of their problems. When considering how to help the "poor," it's necessary to separate wasteful conditions from the experiences of persons who had no control over their loss of income.

Assisting people is the heart of God. It is also consistent with God's nature to bring correction and rebuke when it is necessary to do so. We need to learn from our mistakes and errors of judgment.

Those who are truly poor are in the heart and mind of God. He wants to deliver people from poverty and lack, and that requires assistance from others by way of both biblical understanding, and practical knowledge about how this world and its economic systems work.

PRAYER:
"Lord, I will not act rashly, but will consider my steps before acting or deciding. Help me to help the poor and to correct and counsel others who may have mismanaged their resources. In Jesus' Name, Amen!"

Day 14 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Increase the Old Fashioned Way"

Sunday, September 12, 2010 Bryan Hudson 7 Comments

Proverbs 13:11 (NLT), Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.

The New Living Translation has an interesting way of interpreting scripture. For our 21 Day Growth Challenge on the topic of "Prosperity God's Way," verse 11 is an ideal scripture.

As with many of the proverbs of Solomon, each verse is the contrast in concepts. When you watch late night television, you're bound to see some of the get rich quick program length commercials that promise the world with little to no required "skin in the game." As previous Proverbs have shown in this series, there are no lack people who choose to be a simple-minded and lack good judgment.

Someone once said, "A sucker is born every minute." Those who walk in wisdom from the Lord will never become "suckers" for the schemes of those who do no real work.

Working hard and working smart are surefire ways towards wealth. We should be clear that wealth is a relative term. When I visit places like Nigeria or Tijuana Mexico, I am reminded that nearly all Americans are wealthy and blessed by God. Certainly, we're not talking about the wealth of people like Bill Gates or Oprah Winfrey. We're not talking about the wealth of professional athletes. We're talking about wealth from the perspective of having a full supply and enough over to give to others.

The book of Proverbs, and indeed the whole Bible, support the idea of increase by means of hard work. Sometimes people criticize people who are materially successful, without understanding the hard work and sacrifices that such persons have contributed towards their own success. Many of these same people are employers of many who read this post.

PRAYER:
"Lord, help me always recognize the true source of wealth. Give me grace to work hard and smart. Show me where to spend my time and energy."

Day 13 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "How Scattering Seed Brings Increase"

Saturday, September 11, 2010 Bryan Hudson 10 Comments

SELECTED SCRIPTURES & INSIGHT FROM PROVERBS 11:

Proverbs 11:3 (NLT), Honesty guides good people; dishonesty destroys treacherous people.

We live in a world of deception and dishonesty. People seem to be all too willing to gain an advantage over others by being dishonest. The Great Recession of 2008 occurred, by-in-large, from dishonest motivations and greedy home loan lenders and borrowers. Bernie Madoff swindled his own friends and investors out of some $50 billion. Greed and dishonesty go hand-in-hand. In time, these behaviors destroy those who participate

Proverbs 11:11 (NLT), Upright citizens are good for a city and make it prosper, but the talk of the wicked tears it apart.

The lifestyles of godly people always improve places where they dwell. When I visit my father's house in the inner city, I am always impressed with the appearance of my dad's little house. In fact, the street he lives on looks better than the other streets to the immediate east and west of dad's street. There are several believers on that street. The influence of "upright citizens" in any community always makes a positive difference.

Poverbs 11:24-25 (NKJV), There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty. 25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.

Giving and generosity have always been a part of prospering God's way. Even though we scatter our seed, God causes us to increase. However, if we withhold too much, it leads to poverty. It does not seem logical that giving won't lead to lack, and failing to give does not help one accumulate wealth.

According to Genesis 8:22, there is a principle working in the earth called "Seedtime and harvest." I like to think of this as 1) Seed 2) Time, 3) Harvest. The text also indicates that life has cycles and seasons. When give our three "T's" (remember that lesson?), its like putting good SEED into good soil. After a period of TIME, we can expect a HARVEST.

I have witnessed this promise in my 53 years of life, over and over again, "And he who waters will also be watered himself." We are overly focused on what we get out of someone or something. We should be more focused on "watering" or nourishing and refreshing others.

PRAYER:
"Lord, help me to maintain honesty and integrity at all times. Show me how sowing and scattering seed brings harvest increase, even though it seems like I'll have less for being generous."

Day 12 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "The Blessings of Right Living"

Friday, September 10, 2010 Bryan Hudson 11 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 10:1(NLT)
2 Tainted wealth has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.
9 People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.
16 The earnings of the godly enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on sin.
19 Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
22 The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

INSIGHT:
Proverbs Chapter Ten begins with the heading "The Proverbs of Solomon." (v. 1)

A proverb is a maxim or rule of conduct. The word comes from a Hebrew root meaning "to be like" or "parable." (http://www.biblereferenceguide.com/study/proverbs.html) In this chapter, almost every verse is a proverb in itself. The verses shown above were selected for this post. Below are my insights by verse.

Verse 2: We could think of "Tainted wealth" as something like winning the lottery. It is wealth not earned, but gained by games of chance. Interestingly, about one-third of lottery winners end up bankrupt. Some find it necessary to live in secrecy to avoid the onslaught of people requesting money. Many quit working to live off their winnings, while thers find that working helps keep their lives and relationships bearable.

"Right living" helps believers achieve prosperity God's way. According to verse 22, "The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it." I know some believers who have earned their way to great success and wealth God's way. Such persons have been blessed by God to be humble, joyful, and generous. Certainly not the "tainted wealth" that lacks true value.

Verse 16: People who embrace God's wisdom are not corrupted by material success, because their foundation and focus is not material, but biblical.

Verse 19: It is important to manage our thoughts so that an abundance of speaking does not result is uttering words we regret. Not speaking is sometimes the best thing we can do.

PRAYER:
"Lord, help me avoid schemes that promise prosperity, but only deliver grief. I choose to trust you and work for those blessings that You desire for my life.

Day 11 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "You're Invited to the House of Wisdom"

Thursday, September 09, 2010 Bryan Hudson 12 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 9:1(NLT) Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns. 2 She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table. 3 She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city. 4 “Come in with me,” she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, 5 “Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed.6 Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.”

INSIGHT:

Today, we'll stay in Proverbs Chapter 9, and move up to consider the first six verses. Bible commentators suggest that Proverbs Chapters 1-9 are the introduction to the book, since Chapter Ten begins with the words, "The Proverbs of Solomon."

It is fitting that Chapter Nine summarizes the message of the necessity of embracing wisdom, as well as the dangers of rejecting wisdom. In this text, we see wisdom portrayed as a "good" woman, in contrast to other narratives of the "immoral woman" to describe the condition of persons who lack wisdom.

What is remarkable about this text is the portrayal of wisdom as a house possessing the following characteristics:  Stability ("seven pillars"), Provision ("banquet prepared"), Inclusiveness, (Servants sent to invite persons needing wisdom), and Satisfaction, ("Come, eat my food").

I think of this as "The House of Wisdom." The message is, "Come into the house where wisdom is present." In a similar invitation, Jesus said, "Come unto me all you who labor…I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28).  The message is an invitation to come and dwell with God in His House of Wisdom.

Verse Six is especially powerful: When we come into the House of Wisdom, we should make the choice to "Leave [our] simple ways behind, and begin to live." Coming to God provides an opportunity to leave behind the baggage of ignorance and foolishness. When we gain wisdom from the Lord, we must not go back to pick up our old ways. For example, I used to feel compelled to have the "last word." But after spending some time in the House of Wisdom, I left that simple-minded behavior behind years ago.

Accept the invitation and learn how to prosper God's way.

PRAYER:
"Lord, thank you for the invitation to your House of Wisdom. I will come, learn, and leave my simple ways behind."

Day 10 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Fear of the Lord is the Foundation of Wisdom"

Wednesday, September 08, 2010 Bryan Hudson 9 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 9:7(NLT) Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt. 8 So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you. 9 Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more. Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. 11 Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. 12 If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.  If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.

INSIGHT:
Wisdom and understanding are most appreciated by those who embrace it. People who mock the things of God will likely not accept correction. Such persons need prayer and the saving message of the Gospel of Christ. We would like to think that we can help or "cure" anyone. But the fact remains that the Holy Spirit must help a person become receptive—something the Lord is quite expert at doing!

Wisdom is a virtue best shared among believers in Christ, such as the 21 Day Growth Challenge along with your comments. The "righteous" are people who will honor God and rejoice in His ways. According to Ephesians 4:15-16, the body of Christ "edifies itself" in love. That is, we build each other up, not for selfish reasons, but to make us more effective, and his church, in reaching our generation for the Kingdom of God.

Verse nine says, "Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom." Foundations are vitally important to buildings, especially tall ones. Laying a good foundation is the beginning to any successful building project. The "building project"of our lives requires understanding and living out the principle of the fear of the Lord. I define the fear of the Lord as "A deep desire to please and never displease the Lord."

Upon the firm foundation of godly fear comes "good judgment" (make wise decisions and choices), long life, and other benefits as God's purpose for our lives may determine.

PRAYER:
"Lord, keep me from trying to correct people who mock You. Instead, help me to pray for such persons and present the Gospel of Christ to them. I choose to fear you, not in being terrified, but in love and devotion to You.

Day 9 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Wisdom's Responsibility and Benefits"

Tuesday, September 07, 2010 Bryan Hudson 11 Comments

SCRIPTURE:

INSIGHT:
In Proverbs Chapter Eight, Solomon uses yet another method to make the message of wisdom come alive to the readers. He gives wisdom personality and a voice. Verses 12 - 21 highlight many of the attributes of wisdom including common sense, insight, justice, guidance for leaders, as well as prosperity God's way.

Verse 13 makes a key statement, "All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech." This is especially important when dealing with the subject of material possessions and finance. As stated at the outset of this 21 Day Growth Challenge, much of the bad sentiment about discussions about prosperity/provision has to do with pride and arrogance related to this subject.

Clearly, there is a "right" way to approach this subject and understand how to walk in God's blessings while maintaining a godly and humble attitude. In fact, material success is a by-product of living according to God's word. Putting first things first is one of the themes of the Book of Proverbs. Discussions and teachings that focus solely on money, without regard for greater principles, miss the mark of God's agenda. It's too easy to latch onto scriptures that promise benefits, while ignoring scriptures that call us to responsibility to Christ. If we focus on biblical responsibility, the benefits will follow.

Proverbs Chapter Eight closes with the words (verses 35-36): "For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. But those who miss me injure themselves. All who hate me love death."

PRAYER:
"Lord, thank you for helping me to focus on my responsibilities to Christ and the Word of God. Your blessings and benefits will follow my obedience."

Day 8 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "The Path Principle"

Monday, September 06, 2010 Bryan Hudson 10 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 7:6 (NLT) While I was at the window of my house, looking through the curtain, 7 I saw some naive young men, and one in particular who lacked common sense. 8 He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman, strolling down the path by her house…21 So she seduced him with her pretty speech and enticed him with her flattery. 22 He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter. He was like a stag caught in a trap, 23 awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart.  He was like a bird flying into a snare, little knowing it would cost him his life.

INSIGHT:

Solomon used various methods to communicate the same message of gaining understanding and wisdom. Chapter Seven uses a first person narrative to describe someone he saw out of his window.  He says, "I saw some naive young men, and one in particular who lacked common sense."

What made this young man naive? The definition of naive is, "showing a lack of experience, wisdom, or judgment." He also lacked common sense. What was it that cause Solomon to regard this young man in this manner? Answer: He was walking down a path that led past the dwelling of a well known immoral woman. This is called "The Path Principle," a term I first heard used by Pastor Andy Stanley.

Your path determines your destination. Your intentions and wishes do not determine your destination more than the path that has been chosen. The young man in the story did not know his day would end in sin and destruction because he was seemingly unaware of where his path led.

The message of the story is to recognize the necessity of choosing our paths well. For example, hanging out with people who are up to no good is not just "hanging out," it's a path! Spending time studying the Bible is not just reading. It's a path. Again, since every path has a destination, experiencing prosperity God's way begins with understanding our activities as paths leading to good or bad outcomes.

PRAYER:
"Lord, help understand my activities as paths, not just something I'm doing.  Lead me by your Holy Spirit so that I can discern You path for my life.

Day 7 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Learning from Ants"

Sunday, September 05, 2010 Bryan Hudson 10 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 6:6 (NLT)  Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! 7 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, 8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. 9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? 10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— 11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

INSIGHT:

Success and prosperity do not come without diligence. Sometimes people fall into the traps laid by those who promise to help them "get rich quick." They seem to never learn that there are no shortcuts to prosperity God's way.

Of all the examples that could be provided, Solomon tells the reader to go look at ants in order to learn about the power of diligence. This instruction was intended as a rebuke to those who are lazy, or who the New Living Translation calls "lazybones." By nature, ants prepare for the winter by working to store up resources during the summer.

While poverty for some people is the result of unfortunate circumstances, it is also true that for some poverty comes upon them because of poor planning and laziness on matters that require diligence. Sometimes people are sleep, physically and spiritually, when they should be awake and alert. Obviously, prosperity God's way does not come to those who choose to sleep and not work diligently. He compares this kind of laziness to being attacked by a robber.

Are you awake and alert?

PRAYER:
"Lord, thank you for examples that you provide from nature. I see that all of your creation responds to you. How much more should I respond to you since Christ has saved me and given me His nature? In Jesus Name, Amen! "

Day 6 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Preparation for a Future Without Seduction"

Saturday, September 04, 2010 Bryan Hudson 11 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 5:7 (NLT)  So now, my sons, listen to me. Never stray from what I am about to say: 8 Stay away from her! Don’t go near the door of her house! 9 If you do, you will lose your honor and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.10 Strangers will consume your wealth, and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.

INSIGHT:
In Proverbs Chapter Five, Solomon illustrates the necessity of wisdom by personifying a lack of wisdom and discernment as an immoral woman (verses 1-6). He creates this "person" to embody the dangers of failing to listen to wise counsel. Sadly, later in his life, Solomon betrayed his own wisdom and fell prey to the same dangers he so vividly portrayed. During the season of wisdom in his life, verses 15-20 highlight the necessity of recognizing marriage as the only proper relationship for sexual intimacy.

On the subject of "Prosperity God's Way," notice that some of the consequences of being seduced by the "immorality" of not listening to God included; "Losing honor," "Falling prey to merciless people," and allowing "strangers" to "consume your wealth." The things that God wants us to have, even before we possess them, belong to us. Enjoying healthy, holy relationships belongs to you before you begin dating and courting. Listening to God, receiving His Word, and His wisdom prepares you for a future without the "immoral person" trying to drag you to places you don't belong.

The warning is loud and clear later in the text from Proverbs 5:21 "For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. An evil man is held captive by his own sins;  they are ropes that catch and hold him. 23 He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness."

We want God to see us choosing His path. By His grace we will!

PRAYER:
"Lord, lead me along the path of wisdom. Help me to always listen to Your so that I might avoid the immorality of rejecting wisdom. I will listen to your wisdom and be preserved by You to inherit your blessings and favor. In Jesus' Name, Amen!"

Day 5 | 21-Day Growth Challenge | "Listening for Light"

Friday, September 03, 2010 Bryan Hudson 11 Comments

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 4:18 (NLT), The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day. 19 But the way of the wicked is like total darkness. They have no idea what they are stumbling over…23 Guard your heart above all else,  for it determines the course of your life…25 Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. 26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. 27 Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.

INSIGHT:

We must listen to know and learn. People sometimes behave as if they can figure out everything by themselves. God designed us to be trained by words and examples. We all need mentors and teachers.

Progress and prosperity God's way does not come all at once. As Proverbs 4:18 states, the "way of the righteous" begins with new light, like dawn, that shines brighter and brighter. If we watch the sun, it does not seem to move. If we go away for a while and look back, the sun will be higher in the sky.

When we listen to and follow Christ, we are making progress. There's no question about it. That progress may feel painful, especially when God is helping us forge new and better paths, or leading us to break behaviors/habits that are not useful.

People who do not listen to God are like people trying to cross a totally dark room that is full of furniture. There's pain, stumbling, falling and fear; all the while not knowing what lies ahead. No light.

Verse 23 says to "guard your heart." If we allow unforgiveness, bitterness, jealousy, regrets, hatred or any other destructive element to linger in the heart, we lose sight of the light of God. We lose are way on the "course of life."

PRAYER:
"Lord, help me to recognized progress in my life, especially when times are difficult. Show me how to guard my heart against those things that make it hard for me to listen and see Your light. I will listen and see your path clearly. In Jesus' Name Amen!"

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 4:10 (NLT), My child, listen to me and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life. 11 I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths. 12 When you walk, you won’t be held back; when you run, you won’t stumble. 13 Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go. Guard them, for they are the key to life.

INSIGHT:
A lot of mistakes that people make have to do with not listening closely. Have you ever insisted that someone's instruction was incorrect, only to learn later that there was something lacking in listening?

One of the most important skills and disciplines in life is to listen with a heart to learn. In fact, it is the responsibility of the learner to be clear about instructions and details. Failure in clarity can result in an inconvenience like going to the wrong home address, or something more tragic like an airline pilot trying to land on the wrong runway. Jesus said on more than one occasion, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Today's text, and indeed, the whole of Proverbs, reveals many benefits to listening including: 1) A long, high quality life, 2) Embracing wisdom's ways, 3) Knowing the "straight path," 4) Neither hindered when walking in purpose nor stumbling when running.

Good listening enables you to "take hold of instruction."  As an educator, I desire to see students listen to the point of being able to understand and apply principles in useful and unique ways. Good students and disciples of Christ must "guard" against losing knowledge by applying learning in meaningful ways. In education circles, it's called "transfer of learning" from the classroom to real world uses.

According to verse 13, embracing instruction through good listening is one of the "keys" to a prosperous life.

PRAYER:
"Lord help me to listen with a heart to learn. I have ears to hear so that I can gain a heart of wisdom. Help me remove distractions and barriers from listening to You. In Jesus's Name,  Amen!"

SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 3:13, (NLT) Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. 14 For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold. 15 Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. 16 She offers you long life in her right hand,  and riches and honor in her left. 17 She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying.18 Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.

INSIGHT:
One problem in today's society, and even among believers, is that too many people separate finance from wisdom. Having money without wisdom is like driving a car blindfolded—something is going to be damaged and someone is going to be severely injured.

I like to think of wisdom as knowing the correct destination and the best means to get there. Understanding is knowing the meaning or purpose of a thing.

The text states, "Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding." There is joy in knowing what to do with your core possessions of Time, Treasure, and Talent (the three "T's). For a lack of wisdom and understanding, time, treasure and talent are squandered or abused.

The text does not encourage the reader to reject resources in favor of wisdom, but to allow wisdom to govern one's resources. The best outcome of "prosperity God's way" is joy and satisfaction along with increase.

When we walk in God's wisdom and understanding, we put first things first. 1 Corinthians 1:30 says, "But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption." Jesus becomes wisdom for those who operate within God's plan. Part of that plan is responsibility and generosity with our possessions.

Proverbs 3:9, Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine

PRAYER:
"Lord, I accept the joy and responsibility of gaining wisdom. Help me honor You by yielding my time, treasure and talents to You. I thank You for wisdom and understanding in giving and serving. I receive the blessings you offer me. In Jesus's Name,  Amen!"
