Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:13)

Your loins are the pelvic region of your body. In ancient times “girding the loins” meant to gather up long garments and tighten them up around your hips and waist so that you could run, fight or do something productive.

Have you ever seen a young man trying to run with his pants sagging? Have you ever had the experience of getting some loose garment caught on something? This is the idea of girding your loins.

Therefore, to “gird up the loins of your mind” is to put your mind and thinking in a position to be useful to the Spirit of God, and not merely for selfish aims. The text also stated, “Be sober” and to rest fully on the grace of God. Sober means “serious and focused.”

Most of us have had the experience in school of having to become serious and focus our thinking in order to do well with a class and especially to take a test.

We can use the same approach in regards to how we think and get things done in life.

Reflection Question: On what do you need to focus right now?
